A New Idea
"Pass Back Goat"

re doing well in Tanzania despite the drought! The goats are getting established in the households and family's herds are multiplying!
When families are given a dairy goat, one requirement of Food For His Children is that that family gives the first born goat to another family in need. This is called a "pass-on goat." This requirement is one that families are easily able to meet. In empowering families in need to in turn help their neighbor, the program is also able to make steps towards becoming self-sustainable in the area and has a multiplying effect.

A new idea has surfaced from the Central Committee in Tanzania and has been quickly adopted. It is the idea of a "pass-back goat." A "pass-back goat" is another baby goat that families will be required to give back to the program. This goat kid will be sold in the local market. Proceeds from the sale of these goats will cover the expenses of the core of volunteers in TZ called the Central Committee. Like the US committee, the Tanzanian committee holds monthly meetings. The meeting site is quite a distance for some of the volunteers making attendance difficult. The sale of the pass-back goat will cover transportation fees and other office related expenses to keep the program running smoothly. Implementing this idea is another attempt FFHC is taking in order to make the program self-sustaining and empowering local leaders to engage in community development.
